The Controversy Behind Nike’s Vaporfly Running Shoe, Explained | WSJ

Nike’s Vaporfly shoes have become a popular choice for both elite and amateur runners.

But the shoes may soon be banned in professional competitions if World Athletics, the world governing body of track and field, decides they offer an unfair advantage.

Why has the use of the Vaporfly in sporting events sparked controversy, and what are some of the concerns that have been raised?

In recent years, Nike has gained a lot of attention and criticism for its use of new technology in its running shoes, specifically in the Vaporfly model. These shoes are designed to improve running performance through a combination of cushioning, support and propulsion, incorporating a carbon fiber plate and lightweight foam in its soles.

The Vaporfly has become a staple in the running community, being worn by many elite athletes and breaking many world records in marathon events. However, their efficacy and fairness in sporting events has been challenged, sparking a heated controversy.

One of the biggest concerns is the advantage that the shoes provide to athletes who wear them. Critics argue that the Vaporfly gives runners an unfair advantage over those who do not have access to the technology, and that it goes against the spirit of competition that should be upheld in sports. In response, some races and sporting federations suggested the need for additional regulations or even a ban on the Vaporfly.

In January 2020, the World Athletics, the governing body for track and field athletics worldwide, ruled on the Vaporfly’s legality in competition. The new regulation, that prohibits the use of any shoes with a sole thicker than 40mm and shoes containing more than one rigid plate, was put in place to address the increasing technological propulsion offered by sporting equipment.

There is, however, still some debate about Nike’s use of technology in running shoes. Some argue that technological advancements are nothing new in the world of sports and that the Vaporfly is simply a natural evolution of the traditional running shoe, similar to how newer tennis rackets or baseball bats have transformed their respective sports. Supporters believe that the Vaporfly simply gives athletes another tool in their quest for better performance, and that its use should not be discouraged.

Regardless of the opinions surrounding the Vaporfly, it is clear that Nike’s technological advancements have made them an influential player in the running shoe market. Ultimately, the future of the Vaporfly and other similar running shoes depends on how well the technology is regulated and how sporting organizations evolve their regulations to keep up with technological advancements.

Until then, the running community and sports enthusiasts alike will continue to debate the controversy behind the Vaporfly, and whether it offers a fair playing field in competitive events.
