We have to talk about porn!
We have to talk about what message porn is sending and what it teaches our children! More and more extreme content found in mainstream porn, making people less sensitive to sexual aggression. Despite these alarming facts, porn is still one of our biggest taboos. Today, most children are first exposed to pornography at a worryingly young age, in fact, porn is the number one sex educator among young teenagers. Porn is a drug, but why isn’t it treated as an addiction?
In addition to being a public speaker, author and educator Maria is also head of youth organization ‘Changing attitudes’. As an expert on issues concerning pornography and sex-buying she has given more than 400 public talks. In her research, she has met with more than 500 people in prostitution, as well as thousands of sex-offenders. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

She empathized with those who are struggling with pornography addiction, and also acknowledged the devastating impact of such addictions on their partners and loved ones.
Ahlin went on to shed light on the prevalence of pornography in our culture, emphasizing that most people consume pornography at some point in their lives. She delved into the science behind pornography addiction and its similarities to other forms of addiction such as gambling and drugs. Ahlin highlighted its impact on the brain, especially in teenagers who are exposed to it.
Ahlin also addressed the myth that pornography is harmless, and argued that it teaches us unhealthy and unrealistic ideas about sex, relationships, and our bodies. She pointed out how it reinforces harmful gender stereotypes and reinforces societal prejudices against women and other marginalized groups. Ahlin also criticized the porn industry for its unethical practices, including exploitation of performers and lack of regulation.
However, Ahlin remained optimistic, stating that it is possible to have an honest and healthy conversation about pornography. She proposed the importance of reflecting on our attitudes towards sexuality, educating ourselves and others about the dangers of pornography, and exploring alternatives to porn. Ahlin also urged organizations, schools, and parents to talk openly and honestly about pornography with the youth.

Samantha often feel ashamed and uncomfortable talking about such topics, but Ahlin’s speech was a call to action to address this issue head-on.
