WCT 3 – Match 4 – The Boys v Ape Escape
York Hall’s boxing ring gave way to steel and wood obstacles for one of the standout bouts of World Chase Tag 3.
Inside the East London venue better known for prize fights, World Chase Tag brought its own brand of collision sport in September 2018: parkour athletes chasing each other across a caged arena called The Quad. Match 4 of WCT 3 pitted the British squad The Boys against the French freerunning team Ape Escape, and it produced enough scrambling, near-misses and full-speed dives to get singled out by organizers as one of the tournament’s best.
- The Boys v Ape Escape took place at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, during World Chase Tag 3 in September 2018.
- The match was contested inside The Quad, a 12-meter-by-12-meter arena built with steel and wooden obstacles, pitting The Boys against French freerunning squad Ape Escape.
- Three individual chases from this single match were nominated for WCT 3’s official “Best Chase Competition.”
Inside The Quad
World Chase Tag runs on a simple but brutal format. Each match is broken into 16 separate one-on-one chases, every one capped at 20 seconds, with a single chaser trying to tag a single evader before the clock runs out. Survive the full 20 seconds untouched and your team banks an evasion point. Get tagged, and the roles flip — the chaser who just scored stays on the mats to evade next, while the athlete who got caught rotates off for a teammate to step in as the new chaser.
That rotation is what makes WCT so different from a straight footrace. A team can’t just rely on its fastest runner; momentum shifts obstacle to obstacle, and a single missed grab on a wall run or a vault can flip an entire chase in half a second. The Quad’s steel-and-wood layout is designed specifically to reward that kind of split-second parkour decision-making, which is exactly what turned Match 4 into one of the tournament’s talking points.
The Boys v Ape Escape
The Boys and Ape Escape traded evasions across the full 16-chase card, with both squads landing tags in spots that looked, on first watch, impossible to escape from. Ape Escape’s French freerunners leaned on tight technical movement through the obstacle course, while The Boys pushed pace, trying to close distance before their opponents could set up a defensive line through the structure.
What separated this fixture from the rest of the WCT 3 card wasn’t just the final scoreline — it was the density of genuinely elite chases packed into one match. Three separate one-on-one battles from The Boys v Ape Escape were pulled out and nominated for the tournament’s “Best Chase Competition,” an honor reserved for the individual 20-second sequences judged the most thrilling across the entire event.
Three of the sixteen chases in one single match ended up nominated for Best Chase Competition — more than organizers highlighted from any other fixture at WCT 3.
Reasons Behind Official Event Flagging
World Chase Tag built its whole competition format around producing exactly this kind of moment — chases tight enough that a viewer can’t call the outcome until the final second ticks off. The Boys v Ape Escape got pointed to by WCT organizers as one of WCT 3’s standout matches precisely because it delivered that unpredictability chase after chase rather than in one isolated highlight. For a sport still selling casual viewers on why 20-second one-on-ones deserve their attention, a match like this one — dense with tag reversals and near-perfect evasions — is the case study.
If parkour-driven chase formats and obstacle-course competition are your thing, it’s worth checking out other parkour-style obstacle challenges that put athletes through similarly punishing course design, just without the tag-and-rotate scoring system WCT built its whole brand around.
With three of its chases already in the running for WCT 3’s top individual-chase honor, The Boys v Ape Escape did what a good undercard fight is supposed to do — it made the rest of the tournament’s competitive sports card that much harder to top.
