Hollywood superstar Ryan Reynolds has revealed how he managed to snag the actress who appeared in Peloton’s controversial holiday advert for his own brand of gin.
In the advert, which went viral in 2019, a woman is given a Peloton exercise bike by her husband and documents her daily journey over the next year. Despite being criticized for being sexist and promoting an unhealthy body image, the commercial catapulted the actress who played the wife, Monica Ruiz, to fame.
Fast forward a year later, Ruiz appeared in an advert for Aviation Gin, owned by Reynolds. The commercial cheekily references the Peloton ad and shows Ruiz drinking gin with friends while hinting that she has moved on from her Peloton spouse.
But how did Reynolds manage to snag Ruiz for his advert? He revealed on the SmartLess podcast that he personally reached out to her after seeing the Peloton commercial.
“I don’t know her, but it was the same day the Peloton ad went viral, I think I reached out to her in the comment section of her Instagram, and just sort of said, ‘I’m so sorry, I hope you’re doing okay,'” Reynolds said.
The actor then proceeded to pitch her the idea of appearing in an Aviation Gin advert. “The next thing you know, she’s taken off in this commercial,” Reynolds added.
The Aviation Gin ad proved to be even more successful than the Peloton one, with many praising the bold move by Reynolds to capitalize on the controversy. Ruiz also received praise for her performance and sense of humor.
