Erik von Detten built an entire childhood on Disney Channel and Pixar credits, then simply walked away from Hollywood.

For a stretch of the 1990s and early 2000s, von Detten was everywhere teenagers were looking — soap operas, Disney Channel Original Movies, and one of Pixar’s first blockbusters. Then, without much fanfare, he stopped showing up on screen at all. From Soap Opera to Disney Royalty

Von Detten’s first real break came on daytime television, not a studio lot. As Nicholas Alamain on Days of Our Lives, he spent 1992 and 1993 working through 55 episodes of soap-opera melodrama before he’d even hit puberty — the kind of early, high-volume credit that studios noticed. It was enough to land him squarely in Disney’s pipeline, where he quickly became one of the network’s most recognizable young faces, similar to how other child performers of the era found themselves suddenly recast once producers decided a show needed a different kind of kid, as happened with the mom from Home Improvement.

By 1998, he was the lead in Brink!, playing inline skater Andy “Brink” Brinker in what became one of the defining Disney Channel Original Movies of that era. He followed it by taking over Wally Cleaver in the 1997 Leave It to Beaver remake and then anchoring So Weird as Clu Bell from 1999 through 2001 — a three-year run that made him a fixture of the network’s afternoon lineup.

The Toy Story Villain and Princess Diaries Heartthrob

Von Detten’s biggest cultural footprint, though, didn’t come from Disney Channel at all — it came from Pixar. As the voice of Sid Phillips, the toy-torturing neighbor kid in 1995’s Toy Story, he created one of the most instantly recognizable child villains in animated film. He’d return to the role briefly in 2010’s Toy Story 3, voicing an adult Sid working as a garbageman, in what turned out to be one of his final on-screen credits.

In 2001, he landed opposite Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries, playing Josh Bryant, the popular high schooler whose attention Hathaway’s Mia Thermopolis spends much of the movie chasing. It was arguably the highest-profile theatrical role of his career — and one of the last times he’d headline anything with that kind of visibility.

The Pivot Away From Hollywood

The adult transition never took. ABC’s sitcom Complete Savages came and went quickly, and outside of the Toy Story 3 cameo, von Detten simply stopped chasing roles. Rather than grind through an unforgiving audition circuit that chews up plenty of former child stars, he left the industry outright and moved into finance, working as a sales representative and commodities broker for Rosland Capital, a Santa Monica precious metals firm.

Family Life Takes Center Stage

Von Detten married his wife, Angela, in 2018, and the couple welcomed their daughter, Claire Elizabeth, on May 17, 2019. Angela shared the news on Instagram with a message about the birth that doubled as a mission statement for where his priorities had shifted.

“Welcome to earth sweetie. Giving birth was the most magical experience of my life so far. I didn’t think it was possible to love so deep…seriously I love you more than life itself my baby Claire Bear.”

Angela followed that up in February 2020 with a tribute post of her own, noting that “Erik won’t see this tribute post cause he doesn’t use Ig but I just want to say I’m so grateful for him as my partner.” It’s a small detail, but it says plenty about how completely he’s stepped back from any kind of public-facing career — he’s not even on the platform where his own wife is writing about him.

Von Detten hasn’t announced any plans to return to acting, and nothing in his recent history — a stable brokerage job, a young daughter, an Instagram-free existence — suggests he’s shopping for an agent. For a guy who once voiced one of Pixar’s most memorable villains and shared scenes with Anne Hathaway, that’s a quiet way to close the book, but it’s clearly the one he chose.
