Thirty-five years after the Manhattan Crossrip, the franchise is finally going home.

Sony Pictures dropped the first official teaser for “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” on December 9, 2019, and it’s not a reboot — it’s a direct sequel that picks up the original mythology and hands it to a new generation. Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman, directs and co-wrote the script with Gil Kenan, with his father back on board as producer. The film is set for a theatrical release on July 10, 2020.

That’s the entry point for Trevor and Phoebe, who start pulling apart the house room by room and stumble into gear that shouldn’t exist outside of 1984 — proton-pack era hardware nobody in Oklahoma has any business owning.

Finn Wolfhard’s Trevor gets the muscle car; Mckenna Grace’s Phoebe gets the brains, cataloguing the equipment with the kind of curiosity that makes it obvious she’s going to be the one who cracks the mystery first. It’s a family-driven setup that plays more like a coming-of-age discovery story than a monster movie, at least in this first teaser.

Paul Rudd’s Grooberson Connects the Dots

Paul Rudd’s Mr. Grooberson is the audience’s way into the backstory. He’s not comic relief here so much as the guy with a chalkboard — a seismologist moonlighting as a summer school teacher who can’t explain why the ground keeps shaking with no fault lines anywhere near Summerville. When he sees the kids’ ghost trap, he immediately knows what it is, and shows them archival news footage of the 1984 “Manhattan Crossrip,” effectively narrating the original film’s climax to a generation of characters who’ve never heard of it.

That device lets Reitman fold the entire 1984 mythology into the new movie without forcing Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, or Ernie Hudson to physically show up in the first trailer. All three are confirmed to reprise their roles, but their faces stay hidden here — the only trace of the original trio is an archival audio clip of Murray’s Peter Venkman.

The Spengler Reveal

The teaser’s emotional gut-punch comes when Phoebe finds a hidden subterranean workshop beneath the farmhouse and lays her hands on an original flight suit with a name tag reading “Spengler.” It’s the moment that turns a vague inheritance mystery into a direct bloodline reveal: the “dirt farmer” grandfather nobody in town would talk about was Egon Spengler, played in the 1984 and 1989 films by the late Harold Ramis. It reframes everything the kids found in the house — the PKE meter, the trap, the Ecto-1 under the tarp — as Egon’s own gear, left behind for a family that had no idea what he used to do.

Nostalgia Built for a New Cast

The trailer closes on pure action: Trevor tearing through Summerville behind the wheel of a revived Ecto-1 while Phoebe pops up through a deployable gunner seat and fires a proton pack. It’s the clearest signal yet that “Afterlife” wants to be judged as its own coming-of-age adventure first, with the 1984 cast serving as connective tissue rather than the headline. Anyone tracking what else is still on the 2020 release calendar can see where this fits among the year’s biggest remaining tentpoles, and Sony clearly has more footage in the vault it’s saving for a fuller trailer closer to release.

Reitman still hasn’t shown Murray, Aykroyd, or Hudson on screen in any capacity, which means the second trailer — whenever Sony drops it — is almost certainly where that shoe finally falls. Until then, July 10, 2020 is the date to circle, and Mckenna Grace holding that Spengler flight suit is the image everyone’s going to be talking about until then.
