Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt take Disney’s most famous river ride to the big screen.

Walt Disney Studios dropped the second official trailer for “Jungle Cruise” on March 10, 2020, and it’s the fullest look yet at the studio’s attempt to turn its 65-year-old Disneyland attraction into a tentpole summer movie. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the film pairs Dwayne Johnson’s wisecracking riverboat skipper Frank Wolff with Emily Blunt’s headstrong researcher Dr. Lily Houghton as they chase a legend down the Amazon. Disney has it slotted for a July 24, 2020 theatrical release.

Rival expeditions want the same prize, which is where Edgar Ramírez and Jesse Plemons come in as the trailer’s competing threats working the same jungle.

Frank, for his part, is less interested in ancient prophecy than in getting paid, and the trailer leans hard into the mismatch between Lily’s academic intensity and his fast-talking hustle. Jack Whitehall’s MacGregor rounds out the boat as the fussy, overdressed brother who clearly didn’t pack for rapids.

Action Set Pieces and the Supernatural Turn

Where the footage earns its runtime is in the set pieces: the boat getting chewed up in rapids, a jungle full of animals that are clearly not behaving like normal wildlife, and a supernatural wrinkle that pushes the story past straightforward pulp adventure into something closer to the eerier corners of the original ride’s queue. Sword fights, chases, and near-misses on the river stack up fast across the trailer’s runtime, and Disney is clearly betting the visual effects — waterfalls, ruins, dense canopy — can carry a franchise the way they did for “Pirates of the Caribbean,” a comparison the marketing doesn’t shy away from.

Frank and Lily’s expedition down the Amazon turns a rickety riverboat search for the Tree of Life into a fight against rival hunters and something far stranger than the jungle itself.

The Chemistry Doing the Heavy Lifting

Johnson and Blunt’s banter is the trailer’s clearest selling point — his bravado bumping up against her exasperated deadpan is the engine of nearly every scene they share. It’s the same dynamic Disney has leaned on in other theme-park-to-screen swings, and it’s paired here with a supporting cast, including Paul Giamatti, built to give the leads plenty to bounce off. For a studio still figuring out how many of its 2020 releases will make it to theaters on schedule, a project built around two proven box-office draws is a safer bet than most of what’s left on the calendar.

Disney was still holding July 24, 2020 as the release date when this trailer went out, putting “Jungle Cruise” in the same summer conversation as the rest of the studio’s tentpole slate discussed in the only big movies left that still may come out in 2020. Whether Frank and Lily’s trip down the Amazon ends up sharing a summer with anything else on that list is the question the studio was working through as spring began.
