A buried family secret just got a trailer, and it’s darker than anyone expected.

Vertical Entertainment dropped the first full trailer for Inheritance on March 19, 2020, and it wastes no time turning a routine estate reading into a hostage story. Lily Collins plays Lauren Monroe, a Manhattan prosecutor from a wealthy political family, and Simon Pegg plays the chained, emaciated man she finds locked in a bunker beneath her late father’s estate. Director Vaughn Stein, working from an original script by Matthew Kennedy, builds the two-minute cut around one question: what would you do with a 30-year-old secret your own father asked you to bury?

The trailer opens with the family attorney reading Archer Monroe’s will, and the split is deliberately lopsided — William gets the money and the political capital, Lauren gets a drive and a warning. A posthumous video message from her father tells her that whatever she finds must go to the grave with her. Instead, she follows the clues to a subterranean room on the estate grounds and finds Morgan Warner chained to the wall, gaunt and disoriented, insisting he’s been there for three decades.

From there the trailer pivots into a two-hander of manipulation and threat. Warner knows things about the Monroe family that could unravel William’s political career and Lauren’s own standing as a prosecutor, and he’s not shy about using that leverage.

Collins, coming off high-profile dramatic work, plays Lauren as someone whose entire identity as a prosecutor — a person who believes in following evidence to a just outcome — gets tested by evidence that implicates her own bloodline. Pegg, best known for comedic and action roles in the Mission: Impossible and Star Trek franchises, goes fully against type as Warner, trading his usual quick-witted delivery for something closer to a cornered animal. The physical transformation — six months of cutting weight and body fat down to eight percent — is visible in nearly every frame he’s in, and it’s clearly meant to be one of the trailer’s selling points.

Connie Nielsen plays Lauren’s mother Catherine, and Marque Richardson plays her husband, both caught in the fallout as Lauren decides whether protecting the family name is worth staying quiet. Fans of dramatic thrillers built around inherited secrets may find the setup familiar territory alongside films like Becky, another 2020 thriller leaning on a family under siege.

A Release Plan Scrambled by the Pandemic

Behind the scenes, Inheritance was originally slated to premiere at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival before the festival’s postponement over COVID-19 concerns. Vertical Entertainment and DirecTV Cinema had already acquired North American distribution rights earlier in March, with plans for an April 2020 DirecTV release ahead of a May theatrical and video-on-demand rollout — a staggered release strategy that, given the moment, looked increasingly like the model other studios would be forced into as well. The film was produced by Southpaw Entertainment and Highland Film Group.
