Eddie Murphy ‘Couldn’t Be Happier’ with ‘Coming to America’ Sequel
Eddie Murphy, one of the greatest comedians of all time, is getting ready for the highly anticipated sequel to his 1988 classic, “Coming to America.” With the release date getting nearer, the star was recently on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show,” where he spoke about his excitement for the upcoming film.
Murphy said, “I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.” He went on to praise the screenwriter, Kenya Barris, saying, “Kenya did a great job.” In addition to Barris, the sequel’s director is Craig Brewer.
In the original movie, Murphy played Prince Akeem, a wealthy prince from the fictional African country of Zamunda, who travels to the United States with his best friend, Semmi (played by Arsenio Hall), in search of a wife. The sequel, titled “Coming 2 America,” sees Akeem set to become king of Zamunda but discovers he has a son in America and sets out on another adventure with Semmi.
During his interview with DeGeneres, Murphy discussed the challenges of bringing back beloved characters from the original film, such as sexual barbershop patrons played by Murphy, Hall, and other actors. “It’s like, how do you recreate a classic thing without messing it up?” Murphy said. “And make it as good as the original?” However, the star assured fans that they’re in for a treat.
Fans are expected to be excited about the sequel’s release, with both Murphy and Hall returning as multiple characters from the original film, alongside new faces such as Wesley Snipes and Leslie Jones.
“Coming 2 America” will be released on Amazon Prime Video on 5 March 2021. With Murphy clearly enthusiastic about the new movie, it’s fair to say that we can’t wait to see it.
