THE TOMORROW WAR Trailer 2 (2021)
Chris Pratt just got drafted into a war that hasn’t happened yet.
Amazon Studios and Skydance have dropped the second trailer for The Tomorrow War, and it fills in the blanks the first teaser left open. Directed by Chris McKay from a script by Zach Dean, the film sends present-day civilians and soldiers thirty years into the future to fight an alien invasion that’s already close to wiping out humanity. It streams globally on Prime Video starting July 2, 2021.
- Time-traveling soldiers arrive through a wormhole during a televised World Cup match in December 2022, warning that humanity has just thirty years left before an alien species called the White Spikes drives it to extinction.
- Chris Pratt plays Dan Forester, an ex-military biology teacher who gets drafted into the future war and is determined to secure a future for his young daughter, Muri, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
- The film was originally developed at Paramount Pictures under the title “Ghostdraft” before Amazon bought the distribution rights for a streaming release rather than a theatrical one.
A Draft Notice From Thirty Years Out
The premise lands with a jolt in the trailer: a wormhole opens mid-broadcast during a World Cup match, and soldiers from the year 2051 step through with a message nobody wants to hear. The White Spikes have already pushed humanity to the brink, and the only remaining resource is manpower — meaning today’s civilians and veterans get conscripted and shipped forward in time to fight a war three decades ahead of schedule. It’s a premise that leans hard into body-horror dread rather than clean, Independence Day-style spectacle, something fans of the genre have been tracking closely in roundups like The Best Upcoming SCIENCE-FICTION Movies 2021.
Dan Forester’s Family Problem
Chris Pratt’s Dan Forester isn’t a career soldier chasing glory — he’s a biology teacher and Army veteran who gets pulled back into combat against his will. Betty Gilpin plays his wife, Emmy, and the trailer makes clear his real motivation isn’t the war itself but making sure his daughter Muri, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, has a future worth surviving for. That throughline gives the footage its emotional anchor once the deployments and city drops start piling up.
Thirty years. That’s the entire runway the trailer gives Earth before the White Spikes finish the job.
Strahovski’s Scientist and Simmons’ Survivalist
Once Forester lands in the future, the trailer introduces the two figures shaping his path forward: Yvonne Strahovski as a future military scientist working the problem from the inside, and J.K. Simmons as James Forester, Dan’s estranged, survivalist father. The footage also gives real screen time to Sam Richardson and Edwin Hodge as fellow recruits dropped into the same devastated, war-torn cities Forester’s unit gets thrown into — recruits, not seasoned soldiers, which is very much the point of the draft-everyone premise.
The White Spikes Get Their Close-Up
Trailer 2 spends a lot of its runway on the alien threat itself — multi-tentacled, fast-moving creatures the trailer calls White Spikes, shown tearing through ruined urban blocks in extended combat sequences. The visual effects work is clearly meant to be a selling point for the streaming release, giving Prime Video subscribers something closer to a theatrical action tentpole than a typical streaming original.
From Ghostdraft to Prime Video
The film’s road to release is its own story. It was originally set up at Paramount Pictures under the working title “Ghostdraft” before Amazon acquired the distribution rights, converting what was planned as a theatrical release into a straight-to-streaming premiere. For a big-budget effects picture with this cast — Pratt fresh off Marvel and Jurassic World duty — that’s a significant bet on Prime Video’s ability to open a movie without a box office run at all.
The Tomorrow War hits Prime Video on July 2, 2021, and with Amazon putting this much VFX budget behind a streaming exclusive, it’s shaping up as one of the platform’s biggest tests yet of whether a tentpole can live entirely outside a theater.
