TNT has dropped the official trailer for The Alienist: Angel of Darkness, the second season of its Emmy-winning period psychological thriller based on Caleb Carr’s 1997 bestseller. The footage reunites Dakota Fanning, Daniel Brühl and Luke Evans roughly a year after the events of season one, dropping them into a new case that’s darker in scope and more personal for Sara Howard. Hiring Howard’s agency to find her, the Linares family — including Senora and Martha Linares — drags the trio into a hunt that widens fast, from a single missing child into a network of institutional hospital corruption and the yellow journalism feeding off the panic. Somewhere inside that mess is a child-killer the trailer keeps mostly off-camera, which is exactly the kind of restraint that made season one’s murders land.
New Faces Join a Familiar Ensemble
Douglas Smith and Matthew Shear are back as forensic-detective twins Marcus and Lucius Isaacson, and Robert Ray Wisdom returns as Cyrus Montrose — the connective tissue holding the investigative team together from season one. Ted Levine joins the cast as former NYPD Commissioner Thomas Byrnes, a real historical figure whose presence signals just how deep into department politics this season is willing to go. Newcomers Melanie Field and Rosy McEwen round out the ensemble; McEwen’s casting as Libby Hatch, a character central to Carr’s source material, points toward one of the novel’s more disturbing threads making it to screen.
A Sequel Novel, Not a Rehash
Unlike a lot of prestige-drama sequels built from scratch, Angel of Darkness has a built-in blueprint: Carr’s own 1997 follow-up novel of the same name. That gives the writers a finished mystery to adapt rather than invent, and it’s part of why the trailer feels confident jumping straight into a kidnapping plot instead of re-establishing the trio from zero. For a network counting on this show to anchor its summer lineup the way other outlets leaned on their own July 2020 slates, having the source material already mapped out is a real advantage — especially in a year when so much of the release calendar has been thrown into chaos.
