Canadian-American singer and songwriter Alanis Morissette recently made headlines as she busked in disguise in the New York City subway in order to promote a good cause. The grunge icon surprised commuters as she strummed her acoustic guitar whilst singing songs from her critically acclaimed album “Jagged Little Pill”.
Taking to social media, Morissette shared a video of herself performing with commuters surrounding her, many of whom appeared bemused as they tried to identify the singer. The video featured the message “live music changes the molecular structure of the people and places around it. #undergroundbusking #newyorkmoment”.
The showcase was in support of the “Musicians on Call” organization, which provides live and recorded music to patients in hospitals. Morissette would go on to visit a children’s hospital to put her support for the organization into practice.
Fans who were lucky enough to pass through Times Square station on August 18th would have been thrilled at the opportunity to drop some spare change into the famous artist’s guitar case. Despite being in disguise, Morissette was unable to hide from her growing audience, with a number of her songs being instantly recognizable to her dedicated followers.
The “Ironic” singer felt that her busking experience was magical and allowed her to connect with people in a very different way than through her concerts. The spontaneous aspect of a public performance without any prior planning or expectations allowed Morissette to engage with the public on a more intimate level. The reaction she received from passersby also showed that music truly has no barriers, and that even without the bright lights, high budget, and roaring crowds, she still captivated audiences with just her voice and an acoustic guitar.
Alanis Morissette’s busking experience in New York City was both surprising and inspiring. Her commitment to supporting a charitable organization combined with her love of music has struck a chord with her fans and undoubtably captured the hearts of the lucky few travelers who caught her performance in the subway.
