Eleven trailers, one reel, and the entire 2020 action slate laid out in under twenty-five minutes.

Natasha Romanoff’s Overdue Solo Film

Directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige, “Black Widow” is set between “Captain America: Civil War” (2016) and “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), filling in a gap fans had been asking about since Natasha’s death in “Endgame” made a present-day sequel impossible. Scarlett Johansson returns in the title role and also serves as executive producer, giving her a hand in shaping a character she’d played in supporting roles since 2010. The trailers show Natasha on the run, forced to deal with a past in the Soviet Red Room program that the MCU had only hinted at for years.

That past comes back in the form of Taskmaster, a masked assassin who mirrors any fighting style he observes, orchestrating a conspiracy that Natasha can’t outrun. The plot mechanics are straightforward spy-thriller structure — buried history, a manufactured threat, a family she thought she’d left behind — but the casting around her is what’s driven most of the pre-release buzz.

The Red Room Reunion

To deal with Taskmaster, Natasha reassembles a surrogate family of Russian operatives: Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), another Red Room graduate Natasha considers a sister; Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), a veteran assassin turned scientist; and Alexei Shostakov, the Red Guardian (David Harbour), a Soviet super-soldier built as a direct answer to Captain America. O-T Fagbenle rounds out the supporting cast.

Natasha spends the whole movie confronting the program that made her — reuniting with the one family the Red Room ever gave her, whether she wanted it or not.

Pugh’s Yelena and Harbour’s Red Guardian in particular were built into the marketing as comic relief against Johansson’s more clenched-jaw lead, a dynamic the trailers lean on to separate “Black Widow” from the grimmer spy movies it’s otherwise borrowing from.

The Rest of the Lineup

The reel’s other ten trailers cover just about every corner of the action genre due out in 2020. Daniel Craig’s fifth and final Bond outing, “No Time To Die,” lands at 02:41, followed by Tom Cruise returning to the cockpit in “Top Gun: Maverick” (05:16) and Vin Diesel’s crew going bigger again in “Fast & Furious 9” (07:32) — a franchise entry covered in more depth in the “Cardi B Meets Vin Diesel” trailer breakdown. Matthew Vaughn’s “The King’s Man” prequel follows at 11:25, right before the Black Widow segment.

After Natasha’s stretch, the reel moves into “The New Mutants” (15:18), the X-Men horror spinoff also detailed in its own Comic-Con teaser coverage, then “Wonder Woman 1984” (17:35), “Jungle Cruise” (20:00) and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (21:59). Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” with its time-bending espionage premise, closes the compilation at 24:27. Whether all eleven of these actually make their announced 2020 dates is a separate question from what the trailers promise — and with “Black Widow” pegged to open Phase Four on May 1, it’s the one release date on this list Marvel has the most riding on.
